Local History

The library has a few local history items available for in-house use only.  These items include:

  • I Remember Slater 1889-1989
  • The Town that Moved (regarding how homes and businesses were moved from Sheldahl to create the town of Slater)
  • Slater History 1890-1968
  • Slater High School Senior Class Photos 1892-1958
  • Slater Centennial Quilt book (Centennial quilt available for viewing at Slater City Hall)
  • Sheldahl History book
  • Cambridge, Iowa: The First 150 Years
  • Madrid Centennial book 1883-1983
  • Pictorial Atlas – Story County, Iowa 1985 and 1967
  • Local church directories – various years
  • City of Slater – Municipal Code

We also have microfilm available of the Slater News and Tri-County Times from 1/18/1890 to 12/30/04 which can be viewed in-house using our microfilm machine which has printing capabilities for $.10 per page.

Foundation Directory Online

Looking for a grant?  Foundation Directory Online (FDO) is a research tool to help libraries and nonprofits find the grantmakers most likely to fund their projects. Interactive Media

We have several fun items available to patrons to enjoy and use while visiting the library.  There is a Do-It-Yourself Storytime area, light table with magna-tiles, train table, puzzles, Lego sets, Contraptions, games, and more.  There are also basic school supplies available if needed for homework projects such as pens, pencils, markers, glue, scissors, single and three-hole punch, and a stapler.
