The Friends of the Slater Public Library is a non-profit group that provides volunteer support and funding for projects and events through the Slater Public Library. The Friends operate independently of the library and all donations are allocated to library projects which are voted on by the Friends membership.

Current and Recent Projects

New Library and Community Center

The Friends are working with the Library, Slater Community Club and City of Slater to help raise funds for a new library and community center, with its main focus on furnishings and technology for patron use.  For more information on the building project click HERE.

Free Little Libraries

In the fall of 2020, the Friends collaborated with Raising Readers of Story County to install Free Little Libraries in Slater and Kelley.  The Friends will use book donations to fill the libraries to provide reading materials for children and adults.  Slater’s little library is located on the playground at Nelson Park, and in Kelley you will find one located next to the school bus stop.

Easter Egg Hunt

In 2024 the Friends gave out approximately 200 books and prizes to the children who attended the Easter Egg Hunt.

Summer Reading Program

Friends fund special programs and some of the prizes for the Summer Library Program for elementary school-aged children and for preschool-aged children. The special live presentations are both educational and entertaining. Reading encouragement is featured throughout.

Gather: A Farm to Table Experience

Gather is a Farm to Table experience developed in partnership with award-winning Master Chef, Aaron Holt and his team from Doolittle Farm. Holt hosts farm to table events throughout the year buying from local Iowa growers and producers specific to the event location whenever possible.

This one-of-a-kind experience will include a 4 course meal with live entertainment from favorite Iowa musicians, drinks and appetizers from local businesses, silent auction items, and so much more.

Funds raised from this event will benefit the building fund for a new Slater Library and Community Center.

Golf Tournament Fundraiser

We hold an Annual Slater Library Fundraiser Golf Tournament, held at the Ballard Golf and Country Club.  This is a 4 person best shot tournament with games on several holes and some fun pin prizes. Hot breakfast and lunch provided! All proceeds go toward the community center and library building project.

Stay tuned for details on the 2025 tournament!
