The Slater Public Library is looking for a high-energy young adult who loves to work with kids to assist us with our summer reading program. This student intern position is for approximately 15-20 hours/week for 10 weeks, June-mid August. Ideal candidates will be able to guarantee their availability on Monday–Friday during the weeks of summer programming (June 5-July 22). The position pays $10-12/hr. Applicants must be a student at least 14 years old. Library volunteer experience preferred. Student Intern Job Description
A. Job Title: Student Intern
B. Job Summary: The student intern will be responsible for duties as assigned by the director to maintain library services and property.
C. Job Responsibilities:
· Assist with scheduled programming – set-up, supervision of activities and participants, clean-up
· Answer reference questions
· Assist patrons in identifying or locating materials in the collection; this may involve instructions on use of the computerized catalog
· Check and empty book drop
· Check materials in and out using automated system
· Sort and shelf library materials in designated section and order
· Maintain orderliness of library furnishings and collections
· Assist in opening and closing of the library
· Promote library programs and services i.e. Open Access, interlibrary loan, adult and children’s programming
· Process interlibrary loan requests
· Process Open Access materials
· Process all materials i.e. cover books, label books and DVDs, barcode items, enter new materials on the automated system
· Identify and repair damaged material
· Assist the director with weeding the collection
· Advise director of the need to replace high circulation titles in poor condition
· Contact patrons regarding overdue items
· Register new patrons
· Assist the public with the use of computers and other equipment
· Perform general clerical duties, such as making copies, sending faxes, laminating, and answering the phone
· Notify director when supplies need reordering
· Assist in keeping on-going library records and statistics
· Prepare mail for the post office and for van delivery
· Help with displays, bulletin boards, and other promotional materials
· Schedule conference room for meetings
· Maintain an appropriate library environment for patrons and staff
· Be courteous and responsive to the public
· Work assigned schedule, make own arrangements for a substitute, and notify the director of the change
· Attend monthly staff meetings as required by the Director
· Perform other duties as assigned
D. Physical Demands: Good physical and mental health. The student intern must be able to crouch, stoop, bend, stand, push, lift 25 pounds, and read fine print as necessary to perform above mentioned duties.
E. Qualifications:
a. Minimum
· Student at least 14 years old
· Ability to work well with other employees
· Ability to work well with children and youth
· Possess good customer service skills, and maintain good work habits
· Good keyboarding skills, working knowledge of a computer, the internet, and Microsoft Word with the ability and willingness to learn to operate the library’s automated system, copy machine, fax machine, and other library related machines and technology
· Ability to compare names and numbers, and willing to learn the library cataloging system
· Ability to use basic reference sources in order to answer patron reference questions
b. Preferred
· Library experience or experience from volunteering in a library setting
F. Work Schedule: Part-time/Seasonal, approximately 10-15 hours/week for 10 weeks, June – mid August with the possibility of additional hours as needed.
